Claire Danes Almost Cast as Rose in Titanic: Why She Turned It Down
Claire Danes is best known for her roles in Romeo + Juliet and Homeland, but she almost added Titanic to her resume. In a surprising twist, Danes was considered for the role of Rose in James Cameron’s blockbuster hit. Though Kate Winslet is now synonymous with the character, Danes had a real shot at the part.
The Role That Could Have Been
At the time, Danes had just finished Romeo + Juliet alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, who had already been cast as Jack in Titanic. Many believed that the duo could reunite for the film. In interviews, Danes revealed that she was approached for the role. However, she ultimately decided to pass on the opportunity. “I knew I had to do a lot of thinking,” she said, recalling the decision-making process.
Danes had just finished a big project, and the thought of jumping into another massive film was overwhelming. She knew that Titanic was going to be a huge production, and the commitment was daunting.

Although Danes passed on Titanic, her career didn’t suffer. Shortly after, she took on roles in critically acclaimed films and eventually found massive success in television, particularly with her lead role in Homeland. While she occasionally reflects on her decision, Danes has no regrets. She recognizes that saying no to a film as big as Titanic could have altered her career, but she believes she made the right choice at the time.

Titanic became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, winning numerous awards and earning Kate Winslet an Oscar nomination. While Claire Danes missed out on being part of this cinematic moment, she went on to carve her own successful path in Hollywood. As for whether she regrets her decision, Danes has consistently said, “No.”
